Laurel County man charged with attacking police dog, trying to steal officers weapon during chase
LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - A recent welfare check in one county ended with one man facing some serious charges.
In a post on Facebook, officials with the Laurel County Sheriff’s office state early Monday morning, deputies were sent to a home on Tuttle Road near London to check on a woman.
When police arrived at the scene, they spotted the man, later identified as Steve Wagers, 38, of London, running from the home and into a nearby field. Deputy Jake Miller dispatched K-9 officer Maverick to chase and detain Wagers until police could take him into custody.
During the struggle, officials say Wagers kicked Maverick in the head and tried to disarm one of the deputies trying to arrest him.
When police investigated the home, they found drugs and drug paraphernalia and a woman, Tiffany Hoskins, 29, of London, hiding in a locked room. Hoskins was wanted on outstanding warrants.
Wagers is charged with fleeing or evading police, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, attempting to disarm a police officer, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and assault on a service animal.
Hoskins is charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. She also had three outstanding warrants against her in other cases.
Both are being held at the Laurel County Correctional Center on cash bonds.
